Z’S SCHOOL OF HARD ROCKS - Lesson 7 - The RUNAWAYS

THIS WEEK WE TAKE YOU BACK TO 1975 WHEN FOUR TEENAGE GIRLS GOT TOGETHER TO FORM
A BAND CALLED THE RUNAWAYS. THEY GARNERED A LOT OF MEDIA ATTENTION THANKS TO THEIR
‘JAILBAIT ON THE RUN’ GIMMICK.

THE RUNAWAYS WERE MORE THAN JUST A GIMMICK, THEY WERE GOOD. EACH BAND MEMBER
HAD A SPECIAL QUALITY.
CHERIE CURRIE WAS THE LEAD VOCALIST. HER DOWNFALL AFTER THE BANDBROKE UP IN ’79 WAS DRUG ADDICTION.  HOW TOUGH OF A SINGER WAS SHE? SHE IS NOW AWOODCARVING ARTIST WHO USES A CHAIN SAW TO CREATE HER WORKS.

DRUMMER SANDY WEST HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE BEST FEMALE ROCK DRUMMER OF ALL TIME. SHE WAS A CHAIN SMOKER WHO DIED OF LUNG CANCER IN 2006 AT THE AGE OF 47.

ROSANNA FORD WAS ONE OF THE BAND’S GUITARISTS. ROSANNA FORD WOULD CHANGE HER NAME TO LITA -- LITA FORD.

AND THE OTHER GUITARIST – JOAN MARIE LARKIN WHO IDOLIZED SUZI QUARTO. SHE USED TO HANG OUT AT HOTELS WAITING TO WATCH QUATRO WALK BY. SHE EVEN IMITATED QUATRO’S SHAG HAIRCUT AND PLATFORM SHOES.  JOAN MARIE  LARKIN, WHO WOULD CHANGE HER LAST NAME TO JETT. JOAN JETT.
AND THAT STUDENTS IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE RUNAWAYS – THIS WEEK’S LESSON FROM Z’S
SCHOOL OF HARD ROCKS.

LESSON 6 - Rick Derringer

IT WAS 1965 WHEN A 17-YEAR-OLD KID NAMED RICHARD ZEHRINGER FORMED A BAND CALLED THE MC-COYS AND THEY HAD A HIT SONG CALLED “HANG ON SLOOPY” -- A SONG THAT WAS SO BIG IN THE SUMMER OF 1965 THAT ONLY THE BEATLES’ “YESTERDAY” KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE TOP SPOT.
HOW GOOD WERE THE MC-COYS? GOOD ENOUGH THAT THEY OPENED FOR THE ROLLING STONES ENTIRE 1966 AMERICAN TOUR.
RICHARD WENT ON TO PLAY GUITAR FOR JOHNNY WINTER AND  EDGAR WINTER. HE’S ON ALICE COOPER’S KILLER ALBUM. HE OPENED FOR LED ZEPPLIN AND HE PERFORMED MANY OF THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION SONGS INCLUDING “REAL AMERICAN” WHICH WAS HULK HOGAN’S THEME SONG.
HE APPEARED ON A KISS ALBUM, TOURED WITH CYNDI LAUPER AND IN 2011 HE TOURED WITH RINGO STARR’S ALL-STAR BAND.
EARLY IN HIS CAREER HIS BAND WENT THROUGH A FEW NAME CHANGES THAT INCLUDED  “THE RICK Z COMBO” AND “RICK AND THE RAIDERS”. BUT RICHARD ZEHRINGER CHANGED HIS NAME FOR GOOD WHEN A RECORD COMPANY KNOWN AS

BANG RECORDS SIGNED THE MC-COYS AND ISSUED ‘HANG ON SLOOPY’. YOU SEE, THE BANG RECORDS LOGO WAS -  A  DERRINGER.

AND THAT IS THIS WEEK’S ROCK AND ROLL HOOCHIE KOO LESSON  FROM Z’S SCHOOL OF ROCKS.
