I had a very cool experience recently at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.                 
As a member of the media I was invited to be one of the first people of the season
to ride the JUMPSTART. It's a fully-operational, full-size Harley-Davidson motorcycle
that has its front wheel secured as the back wheel rests on a tumbler that allows the
rider (or novice rider in my case) the chance to really FEEL what it's like to ride a Harley-Davidson.
I've always heard from Harley riders that it's an experience like nothing else you've ever done. 
They were absolutely right on!

From the moment you turn the key, crack the throttle and hear that unmistakable
Harley 'potato' sound, you begin to feel different as if something has taken over,
crawled inside and rearranged your DNA. I felt more muscular, taller - more 'manly'.
I may have grown a beard while on the JUMPSTART also - not positive about that though.
A feeling of freedom took over -as if I suddenly didn't have a care in the world- raced up
my spine to my brain and out my fingers as I squeezed off another gear.
Put it this way... if the cycle suddenly jumped off its moorings and onto the highway...
I'd really have to think twice about bringing it back.
It's the coolest you can feel with no equipment required - except the ear-to-ear grin on my face.
No knowledge or previous motorcycle experience is necessary to ride the Jumpstart
and the motorcycle will not tip over. Trust me there - because I would've done it.
All you need is the desire to ride a Harley-Davidson - and, honestly, who doesn't have that.

Time now for this week’s lesson from Z’s School of Hard Rocks.
Today’s lesson features some little known tidbits about Pink Floyd. First, their name. Where did it come from? They were originally known as the “Tea Set”, until band member Syd Barrett came across a blues album that featured the names of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.
     Pink Floyd played their first concert in 1971. On the bill with them, Buffy Sainte Marie and The 1910 Fruit Gum Company.
     It’s estimated that one in every twelve people in the world have a copy of “Dark Side of The Moon.”
    And finally, something we’ve all wondered, what’s with the telephone operator at the end of “Young Lust?” Well, ‘The Wall’ tells the story of Pink, a rock star away from home in search of wealth and fame and who has casual sex with groupies. He places a telephone call to his wife who is at their home in England and a man answers at which point Pink realizes his wife was cheating on him. Now, the album’s co-producer James Gutherie wanted realism in that phone call, so he placed a real call from Los Angeles to his neighbor in London. The operator was real but she didn’t know she was being recorded. And truth be told, the operator heard in the recording is the second operator they tried the routine with after the first operator’s reaction was deemed unsatisfactory.
And that class, is this week’s lesson from Z’s School of Hard Rocks.

   INITIALLY SHE PLANNED TO ATTEND THE JULLIARD SCHOOL OF MUSIC, BUT TO EVERYONE’S SURPRISE SHE PURSUED A HEALTH EDUCATION CAREER, MARRIED HER HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART AND WORKED AS A BANK TELLER OUTSIDE RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.

WE COULD ALMOST CALL THE PERSON IN TODAY’S LESSON A LOCAL GIRL. GRACE BARNETT WING WAS BORN ON OCTOBER 30 1939 IN EVANSTON ILLINOIS. SHE WAS OF NORWEGIAN AND SWEDISH DESCENT. IN FACT, HER ANCESTORS CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THE MAYFLOWER. HER FATHER WAS AN INVESTMENT BANKER. SHE WENT TO A PRIVATE ALL-GIRLS SCHOOL IN CALIFORNIA, ATTENDED FINCH COLLEGE IN NEW YORK AS WELL AS THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI. SHE MADE QUITE A BIT OF MONEY AS A MODEL SO WHEN SHE AND HER HUSBAND FORMED A BAND, ‘THE GREAT SOCIETY’, IT WAS JUST FOR FUN.
LATER ANOTHER LOCAL BAND – JEFFERSON AIRPLANE - THAT HAD LOST THEIR LEAD SINGER ASKED GRACE TO JOIN THEM. GRACE EVEN BROUGHT WITH HER TWO SONGS SHE WROTE AS A MEMBER OF THE GREAT SOCIETY – ‘SOMEBODY TO LOVE’ AND ‘WHITE RABBIT’ WHICH SHE SAID SHE WROTE IN ONE HOUR. THE AIRPLANE VERSION OF WHITE RABBIT WAS DIFFERENT THAN THE GREAT SOCIETY’S VERSION.  GRACE WAS A MUSICIAN ON THE GREAT SOCIETY’S VERSION – SHE PLAYED OBOE.
AND A FOOTNOTE – IN 1969 DURING THE DICK CAVETT SHOW, GRACE SLICK BECAME THE FIRST PERSON TO SAY “M-F” ON LIVE TELEVISION.

IT WAS THE NIGHT OF SEPTEMBER 16TH 1977. BOLAN AND GIRLFRIEND GLORIA JONES WERE IN BOLAN’S  ROLLS ROYCE.  THEY WERE HEADING HOME AFTER A NIGHT AT MORTON’S DRINKING  CLUB IN SOUTHWEST LONDON. THEY WERE LESS THAN 2 MILES FROM HOME WHEN THE CAR WENT OFF THE ROAD  AND SLAMMED INTO A SYCAMORE TREE. BOLAN WAS KILLED INSTANTLY.
PEOPLE LIKE DAVID BOWIE AND ROD STEWART CAME TO HIS FUNERAL.

     HOW GOOD WERE THE MC-COYS? GOOD ENOUGH THAT THEY OPENED FOR THE ROLLING STONES ENTIRE 1966 AMERICAN TOUR.
     RICHARD WENT ON TO PLAY GUITAR FOR JOHNNY WINTER AND  EDGAR WINTER. HE’S ON ALICE COOPER’S KILLER ALBUM. HE OPENED FOR LED ZEPPLIN AND HE PERFORMED MANY OF THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION SONGS INCLUDING “REAL AMERICAN” WHICH WAS HULK HOGAN’S THEME SONG.
     HE APPEARED ON A KISS ALBUM, TOURED WITH CYNDI LAUPER AND IN 2011 HE TOURED WITH RINGO STARR’S ALL-STAR BAND.
     EARLY IN HIS CAREER HIS BAND WENT THROUGH A FEW NAME CHANGES THAT INCLUDED  “THE RICK Z COMBO” AND “RICK AND THE RAIDERS”. BUT RICHARD ZEHRINGER CHANGED HIS NAME FOR GOOD WHEN A RECORD COMPANY KNOWN AS

BANG RECORDS SIGNED THE MC-COYS AND ISSUED ‘HANG ON SLOOPY’. YOU SEE, THE BANG RECORDS LOGO WAS -  A  DERRINGER.

Boys, this week’s lesson from Z’s School of Hard Rocks is about a man who many radio listeners think is a fictitious character. But he was very real. Born March 5, 1902 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania and died April 27, 1988 in Gainesville, Florida.

     He didn’t start doing what he was best known for until he was 29 years old. But he got good at it – bowhunting that is. He went on to become a world traveler, film producer, founded an outdoor sports company and there is a museum in Grayling Michigan that bears his name.

     He really was Ted Nugent’s friend. They bow hunted together. And in song, Ted calls upon this man’s spirit when he says, “We’re not alone when we’re in the great outdoors. We got his spirit, we got his soul. He will guide our steps and our arrows home. I’m glad to have you at my side my friend and I’ll join you in the big hunt before too long.”

   That was Ted, singing about his friend Fred. Not a fictitious character, but someone who really existed -- Fred Bear.

Our rock history lesson today is about a woman born in 1948 in Ontario, Canada. Cathy Evelyn Smith was her name.

She served time in the California State Prison system for manslaughter. She was the person who supplied the drugs to comedian John Belushi that killed him.


But you know Cathy Evelyn Smith by another name, for something she did in the 70’s. That’s when she joined up with a famous musician. She was a backup singer for him, co-wrote songs with him. She even drove the tour bus. And she was this married singer’s mistress as well, which led to the musician’s divorce which at that time was the most expensive in Canadian history.

This musician-mistress relationship weighed heavily on this musician which led him into the world of drugs. He had to end the relationship and when he did he wrote a song about her. The beginning lyrics to the song are, “I can see her lyin’ back in her satin dress in a room where you do what you don’t confess. Sundown, you’d better take care if I find you been creepin’’round my backstairs.

The musician was Gordon Lightfoot. Cathy Evelyn Smith is Sundown.

THIS WEEK’S LESSON IS ABOUT HOW TWO FARMERS  BORN NEARLY 300 YEARS APART BOTH PLAYED A PART IN MAKING ROCK AND ROLL HISTORY.
     THE FIRST FARMER WAS BORN IN BASILDON, BERKSHIRE ENGLAND IN 1674.
HE WOULD REVOLUTIONIZE BRITISH FARMING BY INVENTING A HORSE-DRAWN SEED-DRILL THAT ECONOMICALLY PLANTED SEEDS IN THE GROUND. FARMERS NO LONGER HAD TO PLANT ONE SEED AT A TIME.
     THE OTHER FARMER IS A SALMON FARMER – A MR. ANDERSEN.  AS WE SPEAK, MR. ANDERSEN EMPLOYS 400 PEOPLE ON HIS SALMON FARM IN STRAITHAIRD SCOTLAND.  IT IS THE LARGEST INDEPENDENT SMOKED SALMON FIRM IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
     I SAW THIS SALMON FARMER ON STAGE IN 1969 AT THE BUSHNELL MEMORIAL IN HARTFORD CONNECTICUT. WHAT I REMEMBER MOST ABOUT THAT NIGHT IS THAT HALFWAY THRU THE PERFORMANCE HE WAS CALLED OFF STAGE. HE CAME BACK ON STAGE WITH A JAR OF BABY FOOD AND A SPOON. HE HAD JUST BEEN INFORMED HIS WIFE HAD A BABY BACK IN SCOTLAND.
     THIS SALMON FARMER, MR. ANDERSON REVOLUTIONIZED ROCK MUSIC BECAUSE UNTIL THAT TIME NO ROCKER EVER PLAYED A FLUTE. YES, MR. ANDERSON – FARMER ANDERSON – IS  IAN ANDERSON WHO NAMED HIS BAND AFTER THAT OTHER FARMER BORN IN 1674 – JETHRO TULL.
     AND THAT  IS THIS WEEK’S LESSON FROM Z’S SCHOOL OF HARD ROCKS.

   OUR FIRST LESSON BRIDGES OLD ROCK WITH THE NEW.
   IN THE WEEKS PRIOR TO PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY’S 1963 ASSASSINATION, ONE OF THE TOP HITS ON THE CHARTS WAS A SONG CALLED ‘DEEP PURPLE’. IF YOU WERE AROUND THEN, YOU KNOW THE SONG. OTHERWISE YOU PROBABLY RECOGNIZE IT FROM OLDIES RADIO.
   THE SONG WAS RECORDED BY A BROTHER-AND-SISTER ACT, NINO TEMPO AND APRIL STEVENS WHO WERE FROM FROM NIAGRA FALLS, NEW YORK.

HE WAS SINGING. SHE WAS TALKING. WHAT WAS GOING ON? WELL, ON THE DAY OF THE RECORDING, HE, NINO TEMPO, DIDN’T KNOW THE LYRICS TO THE SECOND HALF OF THE SONG. SO SHE, APRIL STEVENS TALKED THE WORDS INTO HIS HEADSET AND HE FOLLOWED. ON PLAYBACK, THE SOUND ENGINEER WAS SUPPOSED TO PLAY BACK ONLY TEMPO SINGING, BUT INSTEAD HE PLAYED BACK BOTH TRACKS. THE PRODUCER LOVED IT AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH NINO TEMPO FOUGHT IT BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WANT ANYONE TALKING ON HIS RECORD, BOTH VOICES STAYED. DEEP PURPLE – BY THE WAY, THAT PHRASE HAS MYSTICAL CONNOTATIONS IN THE OCCULT WORLD. THAT’S THE FIRST PART OF THE HISTORY LESSON.
   THE FOLLOW UP: 5 YEARS LATER IN  1968 A GUY NAMED RITCHIE BLACKMORE JOINED A BAND AND THE BAND COULDN’T DECIDE ON A NAME. THEY ALMOST DECIDED ON THE NAME “CONCRETE GODS”.  BUT THEY FELT THE NAME “CONCRETE GODS” WAS A BIT HARSH. THAT WAS WHEN  BLACKMORE SUGGESTED THEY NAME THE BAND AFTER HIS GRANDMOTHER’S FAVORITE SONG – DEEP PURPLE.

Bill Nye the Science Guy is awesomely smart. CNN anchors... not so much?

Between the big east coast snow storms last week and a 150-foot asteroid that's going to get really close to Earth next week, there was plenty of sciency stuff for Bill to help explain when he popped up on CNN. Unfortunately the anchor, Deb Feyerick, had to ask the insanely stupid question of whether the asteroid might be caused by global warming.

Maybe she got mixed upbetween her two topics. Maybe she unclear on the difference between "meteorology" (the study of weather) and actual meteors. Or mabye she's just dumb. Watch the video and decide for yourself.

Today the Onion's AV Club published their critics' picks for the best album-opening one-two punches. Since it is the AV Club, many of their picks delve into some more obscure indie titles. Click the link above to check out their picks. However, we've got a couple picks of our own.

Elwood's choices:

I was going to go with the one-two punch of "Hells Bells" and "Shoot to Thrill" from AC/DC's Back in Black, but the opening pair on side two of the album ("Back in Black" and "You Shook Me All Night Long") is way better.

Your day will likely never be as eventful as the afternoon had last week by Kai, a homeless hitchhiker in West Fresno, Calif. A large man gave Kai a ride on Friday. That’s when the trouble started. During the ride, the man told Kai he was Jesus Christ — because of course he did — and that he had to rid Earth of all black people, so he intentionally rammed a black utility worker with his car, pinning the man against his truck. The crazed driver then got out of his vehicle and attempted to further threaten the pinned utility worker. When two female bystanders tried to stop him, he lashed out at them. Enter Kai and his hatchet:
