Cliff Burton Day declared in late Metallica bass player's hometown

posted : February, 7th by Music News From ABC News Radio - Classic Rock

Paul Natkin/Getty ImagesCliff Burton Day, in the late Metallica bassist player's hometown of Castro Valley, California, is on.

Metallica announced the news on Twitter on Tuesday evening.

The band wrote, "IT’S OFFICIAL! The Board of Supervisors from Alameda County has just proclaimed February 10, 2018, which would have been Cliff’s 56th birthday, 'Cliff Burton Day.' Thanks to all of the fans who got behind this initiative. We love that he remains so revered."  The post included a picture of the official proclamation.

The honor comes in response to a Change.org petition launched by Castro Valley local Robert Souza, who convinced Castro Valley's Municipal Advisory Council to back the measure last month. The proposal then went on to the county board which backed the idea Tuesday.

Burton joined Metallica in 1982 and played on the band's first three albums: 1983's Kill 'Em All, 1984's Ride the Lightning and 1986's Master of Puppets. He died in a tour bus accident in September 1986.
