After the film rights to many of Marvel Comics’ characters were sold off to various studios in the 90s, the company’s movie family has slowly been reunited. Most recently, Spider-man was welcomed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a deal with Sony. Now the most significant reacquisition is seemingly about to take place.
Disney – the parent company of Marvel Studios – is about to purchase 20th Century Fox assets, including its film holdings. For Marvel movie (and comic book) fans, this is fantastic news. Literally. Fox holds the movie rights to such characters as The Fantastic Four, which many fans thought were mishandled on the big screen. The X-Men, Wolverine, Deadpool and the Silver Surfer are also Fox holdings and could potentially be brought into future MCU offerings.

The sale is pending shareholder and government approval but it looks like that may be a formality (shareholder-wise anyway). The opportunity to bring in these new characters also brings new story possibilities. You think the “Infinity War” story is big? The “Secret Wars” story is massive. And it involves everybody. EVERYBODY. Will they try to make it happen? Who knows. Either way, this fanboy is excited for the future of Marvel Studios.
