I have spent a lifetime opening cans of food, only to have the lid fall in and deal with the awkward situation of getting it back out without slicing open your fingers on the jagged metal edges you just created. Turns out, if I’d been using the can opener properly it never would have been a problem.
If you hold it like most people do, the crank that you turn is facing out to the right when you’re opening a can. But apparently that part should be facing up. If you do it this way, it cuts through the side of the can instead of the top so the lid won’t fall in… plus it keeps gripping the lid when you’re done. So it pops right off, and you can drop it into the recycling bin without ever having to touch it.
I switched to this method over the weekend, and will never go back.
Did you know about this? Am I the only one? Let me know how you open your cans in the comments below.
