The formerly staid and sleepy city of Manitowoc is charging hard at becoming a vibrant place for entertainment and exciting new developments. A new live music and entertainment venue called The Wharf (pictured) is yet another example. It uses old shipping containers (the kind which are used on the cargo ships which use the port in Manitowoc), a boardwalk and sand along the waterfront for a new summer concert series. Read more about it by clicking the link below. Kudos to a progressive and proactive mayor, Justin Nickels, and everyone who is working hard to re-imagine and remake Manitowoc into a must visit destination! It has the beautiful and historic Capitol Civic Centre, a number of good restaurants and plenty of places to get a drink, from homey neighborhood taverns to more upscale joints and a few one-of-a-kind bars (you have to have one at The Stage Door at least once). It’s also one of two harbors for the Badger Ferry, which is a super cool and retro way to travel across Lake Michigan rather than drive through Chicago or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Get a stateroom on an overnight passage, watch the expansive night sky and then catch a snooze the way our grandparents and great grandparents might have. Give this Wisconsin coastal city a day or two of your time this summer. If you do, you’ll be back.
