For many, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin is just a stop for lunch, gas or supplies on the way to the “real Door County” north of the shipping channel which connects Lake Michigan to the bay of Green Bay. But I know it as home to transplanted friends (some mentioned in the linked article) who have created a special community. Over the past dozen or so years now, Sturgeon Bay has become a one of a kind artist’s haven, especially for music. The beauty of it is its inclusiveness, its love if creativity, its unpretentiousness and its welcoming attitude.
Next time, don’t just pass through. In many respects, Sturgeon Bay is now the most genuinely real part of Door County and I thank my friends and those they’ve inspired for it.
This article, penned by a sort of accidental tourist, captures it quite well. Get off the beaten path and let special moments happen.
