Green Bay leaders want to buy a house on the city’s east side so they can tear it down to avoid future flooding problems.
The home is on East Mason Street along the East River. High water levels over the summer damaged several houses in that area and some are still condemned today.
Alderman Bill Galvin says they plan to demolish the home and turn the land into a park. He thinks that would be one less flood victim, and the park would help absorb water.
A number of other homeowners along the river hope they’ll get similar offers. Galvin says the project would cost the city about $50,000. He says they can’t buy every property that’s had flood damage.
