Governor Evers is joining with Democratic lawmakers to officially propose a “red flag” law.
It would let judges take away guns from people, if they’re a threat to themselves or others. Evers is calling on Republicans to take up the bill, along with one requiring universal background checks.
The governor says when lawmakers choose ideology over doing what’s right, that’s a choice that has consequences.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos oppose both bills. The top two Republicans in the Legislature believe the “red flag” proposal would threaten due process, and the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding people.
Evers says he would also consider buybacks of assault weapons, but he’s focused on the other two bills right now.
Vos and Fitzgerald argue that shows Democrats want to take people’s guns away.
