Four proposals to get tougher on drunk drivers are taking a step forward.
A Senate committee approved them today.
They include requiring first-time offenders to appear in court.
Another would set a minimum sentence of five years in prison for a conviction of homicide by driving drunk. A judge would be able to hand down a lesser sentence, by describing the decision in writing.
A third bill would increase the minimum sentence for fifth and sixth OWIs from six months behind bars to 18 months.
