Traditions are fun, silly, stupid and dangerous. This is one of the ‘dangerous’ ones.
There’s a tradition at Maine’s Maritime Academy where they fire off a cannon after touchdowns. OK, that’s kinda’ cool.
But for safety-sake maybe, like crossing a street, you’d want to look both ways (and in front of you) before firing it off.
A Maine Maritime alumnus brought his own cannon (because doesn’t everybody have one) to the game in order to keep up the touchdown tradition alive. And to (apparently) kill anyone around it. They scored. He fired. BUT didn’t see the referee walking in front of the cannon. BOOM! goes the dynamite or black powder and a ‘wad’ in this case and caught the ref in the face. Ouch!
The ref was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation continues.
