The idea of having parking meters where people can only pay using an app didn’t go over well, in a small test, in downtown Appleton.
Public Works Director Paula Vandehey says they tried it for a couple of weeks along Morrison Street, north of College Avenue. She’s calling it a “failed pilot” because two nearby organizations raised legitimate concerns.
Vandehey says some people don’t have credit cards, and they need them to pay with the app. She says others were concerned about sharing financial information through the app.
The city tested the change because Vandehey says their parking meters are getting older, and they’ll eventually need to replace them. That would cost about $250,000.
