There’s a disagreement on how Outagamie County should spend the money from the upcoming half-cent sales tax.
The tax starts January 1st, and it’s expected to generate $20 million in revenue.
When the county board approved it, over the objections of County Executive Tom Nelson, members put together a plan. Nelson’s proposed budget for next year initially put all of the money toward property tax relief instead. He later decided to offer half of it to communities and school districts.
Supervisor Kevin Sturn is the chair of the finance committee, and he says committee members aren’t changing their original stance from several months ago. He says they’ve been consistent about taking a balanced approach to the tax.
Sturn says the committee is asking the full county board to use the money to lower property taxes, reduce debt and borrowing, and provide more funding to communities and school districts.
