Wisconsin is leading the country in the number of farmers declaring bankruptcy.
A report from the American Farm Bureau Federation shows 48 farmers in the state filed for bankruptcy, over a 12-month period that ended in September. The nationwide totals are up 24 percent from the previous year.
The report blames trade wars and weather conditions for making a difficult farm economy even worse.
It’s the second straight year that Wisconsin had the most bankruptcy filings.
The bureau also found that on average, 40 percent of a farm’s income came from government subsidies, including trade and disaster assistance.
