Majority Republicans in the Legislature quickly opened and closed a special session on gun laws this afternoon.
Governor Evers was demanding a vote on bills to require universal background checks and a “red flag law.” He ordered the special session last month.
Advocates held a rally at the Capitol this morning.
Madison West High School student Karly Scholz is the state director of March For Our Lives. That group was created after the Parkland High School shooting in Florida. She says students go to school every day wondering if they’ll be next, and if they’ll make it home safe. She says that impacts their grades, physical health, and mental health.
Scholz believes the refusal by Republicans to take up the bills equates to the GOP saying the lives of students don’t matter.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is accusing Evers of “playing politics” by calling the special session.
