After creating some controversy during his time on the Appleton school board, Alvin Dupree decided not to run again.
Dupree says he had two goals when he joined the board three years ago. He says Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is now a school holiday, and the district reformed the truancy court.
The district revamped its public speaking policy last year, after Dupree talked about his Christian beliefs at Appleton North High School’s graduation. He says that had nothing to do with his decision.
Longtime board member Diane Barkmeier also isn’t running again, after 24 years on the board.
There will be four candidates for three seats in the April election. They’re incumbent Barry O’Connor, and newcomers Kristine Sauter, Amber McGinley, and Gary Jahnke.
