A Republican lawmaker from Greenville wasn’t happy with some of the comments from a judge about two former UW-Oshkosh administrators.
Rep. Dave Murphy says the judge talked about what a great job former Chancellor Richard Wells and Vice Chancellor Thomas Sonnleitner did, and what an asset they were to the community.
They were convicted of a felony misconduct charge for their roles in the university’s foundation scandal.
Murphy says while Wells and Sonnleitner didn’t line their pockets through their actions, they were playing “big shot” with other people’s money. He says because of that, the foundation went bankrupt.
Prosecutors say Wells and Sonnleitner illegally guaranteed loans to the foundation for several projects. They’ll each have to pay $75,000 in restitution and fines. They won’t spend any time in jail.
Murphy is the chair of the Assembly’s Committee on Colleges and Universities.
