Wisconsin National Guard members can now get a refund for their college tuition, and room and board, if they’re activated even for a short time.
Capt. Joe Trovato says they pushed for the change in state law, after some students had to leave at the beginning of the fall semester in 2017. They were called to Florida to help clean up after Hurricane Irma.
Trovato says the members had to make a decision on whether they should drop classes, in case they wouldn’t be able to catch up later. He says there was also uncertainty about how long they’d be on active duty.
Wisconsin is now the only state in the country to guarantee refunds when soldiers spend less than 30 days on active duty during a semester.
