Lawmakers are fighting over how to use the state’s projected budget surplus, and a poll shows people would rather spend money on schools than lower their property taxes.
Marquette Law School Poll Director Charles Franklin says 56 percent support more school funding, while 38 percent want a tax cut.
He says people also generally support school referendum questions. Fifty-seven percent would be inclined to vote “Yes” and 34 percent would be more likely to vote “No.”
Governor Evers vetoed a Republican plan that would’ve cut income taxes by $250 million, and personal property taxes for businesses by $45 million.
The governor wants to put $250 million toward public schools, and cut school property taxes by $130 million.
