Children in Outagamie County will have better access to mental health services, thanks to a new law.
Governor Evers signed a bill to set up a school-based pilot program. Teachers and staff will be able to connect students with child psychiatrists.
Republican Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Vandenbroek worked on the proposal. He says school staff will benefit the most, because they’ll have more resources, and more help dealing with kids when they’re facing a mental health challenge.
Steineke says teachers and staff will also learn about some of the signs of mental health issues.
He believes the county is a good fit for the pilot program, because there are a mix of urban and rural school districts. It’s an extension of a statewide program he pushed for several years ago, linking pediatricians and psychiatrists.
