Governor Evers wasn’t able to explain to a reporter why he vetoed a bill that would’ve legalized paddlewheel raffles.
He told the reporter “you caught me,” adding he signed over 100 bills over the past few days.
His spokeswoman says the administration quickly got back to the reporter with an answer.
The Legislature unanimously passed the bill, covering anyone with a Class B gambling license. Paddlewheels are often used for meat raffles and other events, but they’re technically illegal.
Evers wrote in his veto message that there are concerns Native American tribes could consider it an expansion of gambling, and it might violate the gaming contracts for casinos. He said that could cost the state millions of dollars in revenue.
