Appleton police are encouraging people to wear pink tomorrow, on Tuesday, March 10th, to show support for the family and friends of a three-year-old murder victim.
Zyana Corbin was killed on February 26th, and her funeral is tomorrow.
The department is helping organize Go Pink for Zyana. The lights outside of the police department will be changed to pink for the next several nights. The lights in Houdini Plaza and at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center will also be pink.
Corbin’s obituary says her favorite color was pink. Her mother’s boyfriend, Demetrius Williams, is charged with killing the girl, and trying to kill Corbin’s pregnant mother.
Appleton police issued a press release on Go Pink for Zyana:
The Appleton Police Department invites the community to Go Pink for Zyana.
Please join us tomorrow, Tuesday March 10th, to Go Pink for Zyana Corbin, the precious child tragically taken from her family and friends on February 26th.
Tomorrow morning Zyana’s family will hold a service and lay her to rest. We are asking the Appleton community to wear something pink tomorrow to show support for her family and friends.
The lighting outside of the Police Department will be changed to pink for the next several nights. The lights in Houdini Plaza and at the Fox Cities Exposition Center will also be changed to pink.
There are wicked things that occur in this world that none of us can understand, but when they happen we need to come together to support each other and those who are hurting. Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with her family, but they are also with the others who are struggling with this tragedy including her neighbors and friends, our first responders and hospital staff, and our community members who may have also suffered the loss of a child.
It is a helpless feeling when we see people suffering and we feel like there is nothing we can do. But, there is a powerful healing that happens when strangers take time to let someone who is hurting know that they care about them and are supporting them.
Below is an excerpt from Zyana’s beautiful obituary written by her family:
“Zyana was a loving, sweet and genuinely happy child that enjoyed being around her family. Our child enjoyed watching Peppa Pig, Dora the Explorer, reading and dancing. Zyana had dreams of becoming a ballerina and Doctor. She loved to help her mom cook and playing at the playground with other kids, making them happy.
Zyana loved to wear colors when she got dressed for her day, but her favorite color to wear was pink. She was always concerned about her family and wanted to brighten up their day.”
Please join us in wearing pink to remember Zyana, to try and brighten the day for her family, and to show them that love always overcomes evil.
We will share photos from the Appleton Police Department tomorrow using #pinkforZyana. Please consider sharing and posting to social media how you plan to Go Pink for Zyana.
