Lauren Moen, who manages an Appleton, Wisconsin homeless shelter, says her shelter has been sorely tested by the coronavirus pandemic because the homeless population is especially vulnerable. But when she went shopping for supplies for Pillars, Inc. at a local WalMart store, what she found was a lift in spirits and a story (if you’ll pardon the ill-timed expression) of infectious generosity, compassion and good will in a time when happy tales seem part of a world we have left behind.
