The newest coronavirus shortage isn’t toilet paper and hand sanitizer (that’s SO last week) this time it’s a good shortage… pets. Particularly those up for adoption.
New York City (seemingly the epicenter of Covid19) has seen a huge spike in dog/cat adoptions this past 10 days. Some shelters are reporting they are close to or completely out of pets to adopt or foster – Awesome!
Apparently, Shelter-in-Place has made people seek out furry companions to ride out the pandemic with.
“For the moment we definitely don’t have any dogs left to match, which is a great problem to have.” said Anna Lai, the marketing director at New York area shelter Muddy Paws.
And its not just NYC, the A.S.P.C.A. (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) saw a 70% increase in adoptions and fostering at its L.A. office. And Best Friends said many of the shelters it partners with across the U.S. report the same phenomenon. Best Friends C.E.O. Julie Castle saying, “We’re seeing people show up in droves to foster.”
Quarantine has even sent stocks of online pet supply retailer Chewy, Inc and medical supplier PetMed Express, Inc. soaring 13% at a time when many stocks (as we well know) have gone to the dogs.
We would encourage you, if you’re feeling lonely during this time of Corona, to inquire of your local shelter if you’re looking to find a new best friend to quarantine with.
