There are lots of ways to deal with having our social lives halted in its tracks by a viral pandemic. You could shutter yourself away like a hermit and avoid all human contact, physical or digital. You could watch the news all day long and debilitatingly freak out about the possibility that you or someone you love might contract Covid-19. You could practice social distancing while taking advantage of the extra time with your family to bond over movies, games, books and meals. You could ignore all of the warnings, be completely irresponsible and go about your daily life like nothing was different and as a result either contract the virus or pass it along to others by your idiocy. Or you could do what I do.
I try my best to socially distance myself from others and, since I’m one of only a few WAPL airstaff members currently allowed in the building, I try to disinfect shared surfaces meticulously (radio people are filthy, lol). I try to keep our listeners informed with the Rick and Len Show and all of our social media platforms and this website. And I try to help people laugh in the face of tragedy because I think it’s a healthy way to deal with it. The latter is why I teamed up with Michael Bailey and Russ Reiser of the band Vic Ferrari to produce a fun video this week. I perform with those two and about 30 others in Symphony on the Rocks and we had a full month of concerts planned for sold out or nearly sold out theaters around the state in March until the pandemic forced the cancellation or postponement of those shows. Michael and Russ wanted to let their fans know that they miss them and maybe brighten their day with a little something from their favorite Midwest band so we penned some Safer at Home lyrics and put them to the tune of a well known song. We gathered in Michael’s backyard, stayed at least six feet apart as much as possible and produced the gem you can watch here. We hope you enjoy it. I hope video doesn’t kill this radio star!
Our thanks to Meg Rucker Brew for holding the camera and providing encouragement and to Ross Maxwell of WAPL and Kaytie from Razor 94-7 and 104-7 for some technical assistance in getting it to you.
Stay safe and wash your hands you dirty animals!
