Appleton police say a Kaukauna man stabbed a police officer in the parking lot of the downtown police station early this morning.
Lt. Mike Frisch says they believe 49-year-old Troy VanGrinsven was following that same officer on patrol, about two hours earlier. He says the officer got out of his car at the station, around 4:15 a.m., and noticed the same car parked in the street.
He says the suspect was standing by the employee entrance, and appeared to be hiding something behind his right leg, before attacking the officer.
Frisch reports the officer fought back, and took VanGrinsven to the ground. The officer was stabbed several times with a kitchen knife. Other officers came to help, and one of them was cut on the hand, while trying to get the knife.
Both officers were treated at a hospital and released.
VanGrinsven is in the Outagamie County jail.
Frisch says VanGrinsven was also following an officer, in another community earlier, and they’re trying to figure out why.
