Silent but Extremely Deadly?
In these times of Covid-19, we’re all worried about touching any surface, wearing masks to take out the garbage, holding our breath as you pass by people at the grocery store… and now we have to worry about farts? Possibly.
Recently, two Australian doctors debated the possibility of spreading the coronavirus through flatulence… y’know, the ‘thunder from down under‘.
During an episode of the “Coronacast” host Dr. Norman Swan made a cautionary suggestion when it comes to particles of feces set adrift within a fart and the spread of COVID-19.
“I think that what we should do in terms of social distancing and being safe is that … you don’t fart close to other people, and that you don’t fart with your bottom bare.”
Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, a Mount Sinai South Nassau epidemiologist and professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai told the NY Post ,
“Studies have clearly shown that a significant percentage of COVID-19 patients do have GI [gastrointestinal] symptoms at the time of illness presentation. However, there are no published data on whether flatulence alone presents any risk of transmission, although in a clothed person, it would be unlikely to be a significant route of transmission,”
Just another reason to practice social-distancing and proper use of PPE’s and also a reminder to maybe start wearing pants… at least in public.
