Former Governor Tommy Thompson will be the interim leader of the UW System.
He’s expected to hold the position for at least a year.
President Ray Cross is retiring at the end of the month.
The Board of Regents was looking for a new leader, but all of the remaining candidates dropped out. University of Alaska System President Jim Johnsen was the only finalist, and he withdrew last week.
Thompson is Wisconsin’s only four-term governor. He left in 2001 to become the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary under former President George W. Bush.
