A fund is offering Appleton a $500,000 grant to help pay for the next trestle project over the Fox River.
The David and Rita Nelson Fund, through the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, could also get naming rights for the crossing between the Trolley Square and Atlas Mill buildings.
Deputy Parks and Recreation Director Tom Flick says they want to get going on the designs next year, and possible start construction in late 2021 or early 2022. He hopes it can open in the summer or fall of 2022.
Flick says the bridge would have an arch on each end, highlighting the Nelsons.
The city council could take up the proposed grant next week.
The project could cost almost $3 million. Flick says they also received a $300,000 grant from the Outagamie County Greenways Fund, and they’re going to apply for others.
