A 33-year-old man is accused of a hate crime in the death of a motorcyclist in Fond du Lac County.
Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says Daniel Navarro deliberately hit an oncoming Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Winnebago Drive last Friday.
He calls it an attack on “white culture.” He says Navarro told investigators he chose a man on a Harley motorcycle because he believed riders are typically racist white men.
Fifty-five-year-old Phillip Thiessen of Fond du Lac was on the motorcycle, and he died at the scene. He was former police officer in Virginia, a retired agent for the state justice department’s Internet Crimes Against Children unit, and a Navy veteran.
Navarro is facing several hate crime charges, including first-degree intentional homicide. He’s in custody on a $1 million bond.
