The state Supreme Court is overturning three of the partial vetoes Governor Evers made to the state budget, but leaving a fourth in place.
Lawrence University Political Science Professor Arnold Shober says in all of the cases, Evers was changing the intention of the Legislature, and using money for other purposes.
He says the split ruling leaves some questions. Shober believes it’s not entirely clear where justices are drawing the line, over what types of partial vetoes are allowed. He says that makes the decision a bit confusing.
Justices also decided not to rule on another case that challenged partial vetoes former Governor Scott Walker made in 2017, saying the challenge was filed too late.
Wisconsin’s governor has one of the most powerful vetoes in the country.
