The timing of a school referendum in Oshkosh is coming into question.
The district is putting two proposals on the November ballot.
One would extend the current $8 million in additional revenue for ongoing expenses for another nine years. The other would spend $107 million to replace Webster Stanley Elementary and Merrill Middle schools.
Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce President John Casper thinks that can wait until after the pandemic has eased.
On the night the Oshkosh School Board approved the referendum questions, Board member Stephanie Carlin admitted that some people had told her it was “crazy” to ask for additional money now.
Oshkosh school officials argue the time is right for the referendum because interest rates are at historic lows. They say Webster Stanley and Merrill will need tens of millions of dollars in repairs and upgrades in the near future.
