When Tom Petty wrote the songs for Wildflowers, which was released in 1994, he wrote more songs than he could release at the time. Petty and his co-producers Rick Rubin and Mike Campbell completed the album and planned on releasing it as a double CD with 25 songs, nearly two hours of music. Petty’s record label convinced him to release Wildflowers as a single CD with 15 songs, still more than an hour in length. Before Petty’s death, he was hoping to release the final ten songs in an album called All The Rest, but he it never came to fruition, until now.
Now, Wildflowers & All The Rest, the long-awaited Wildflowers reissue and comprehensive collection, will be released on October 16th with Tom Petty’s vision of the album becoming a reality with the help of his family, bandmates, and collaborators who helped unearth many previously unheard gems.
They also released “Wildflowers (Home Recording)”, a solo demo version of the title track, along with video featuring never-before-seen footage of Tom at his home, shot by Martyn Atkins during the recording of Wildflowers. That video can be seen below.
Wildflowers & All The Rest will be released in multiple formats. The most basic version has 25 tracks on two CDs or three LPs and goes up to the most deluxe packages that have 70 numbers on five CDs or nine LPs. Wildflowers & All The Rest – Deluxe Edition will feature 15 recordings made by Tom in his home studio as he was writing the album. With these solo demos you can hear Petty play all the instruments and revise lyrics as he works. The Deluxe Edition contains 14 live performances of songs from “Wildflowers”, recorded during several tours from 1995 to 2017. Wildflowers & All The Rest – Super Deluxe is a direct-to-consumer limited-edition set featuring “Finding Wildflowers” which has 16 studio recordings of alternate takes of “Wildflowers” songs as they worked to get the finishing touches on the original album.
In June, the family of Tom Petty released his 8 track demo of “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. The song will be part of the upcoming Wildflowers & All The Rest collection and the demo version can be heard below with an animated video created and directed by Ben “Blaze” Brooks and Aaron Hymes.
