Family Video announced that they will close their remaining stores after 42 years in business. The Midwest-based chain had just over 250 stores still open at the end of 2020 but with competition from streaming services and ultimately the worldwide pandemic, the decision was made to close its doors. In addition to movies and other video releases, the chain also offers video games and in recent years became a retail stop for CBD products. Wisconsin has around 40 locations with about fifteen within the WAPL listening area.
There may have been some local knowledge of the closings before the official announcement was made. A longtime Papa Murphy’s Pizza franchise which shared a building with a Family Video location on Calumet Street in Appleton has been in the process of moving to a new store in the last few months, on the same street about a mile to the east in front of Kohl’s. A number of the closing Family Video locations are expected to offer deals on remaining merchandise and store fixtures.
