Waupaca County Sheriff Timothy Wilz is asking the state Department of Justice to review the operations of his department. The request follows a report by our T-V news partner Action 2 News that featured Wilz testifying in court that a report provided to the District Attorney’s office–and to defense lawyers in a trespassing case–had been altered from their original form. The defense attorney in the case asked if that was standard procedure and the sheriff claimed it was. Wilz has issued a statement saying the deputy that initially filed the report was aware of the changes that were made and agreed they were more accurate. Wilz adds that the D-A’s office brought in an outside agency in September of 2020 to review the matter and found the department did not infringe on the rights of the defendant. The sheriff adds that having the D-O-J investigate is part of a commitment to transparency.
