Here is an interesting piece of largely forgotten music history that I stumbled upon while looking for something else.
It was 25 years ago. Elton John taped a TV special called An Audience with Elton John. The audience was comprised of numerous celebrities who were encouraged to ask Elton questions between songs. In the crowd, you can see David Copperfield, Ozzy, a whole skank-load of Spice Girls, and more.
One of the celebrities in attendance was actor Richard E. Grant (Allegiant General Pryde in the Star Wars universe). Now, we’ve all heard the old cliché about how a great actor could read the telephone book and make it interesting. Grant, however, wondered if a great writer of music for other peoples words, like Elton, could, on the spot, turn the instructions to his new oven into an enjoyable tune? That’s something I’m sure we’ve all wondered about a time or two. Well, Elton gamely gave it a go. How did it turn out? You’ll have to watch to find out.
