Blues-rock innovator and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Beck, who revolutionized how the guitar is played, has died at the age of 78. Beck’s family confirmed the former Yardbirds guitarist’s death Wednesday, a day after Beck’s death. Below is a statement from the family.
“On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

Beck rose to fame in the ’60s when he replaced Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds. He left a year later to start his own group The Jeff Beck Group, featuring Rod Stewart and Ron Wood. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 as part of the Yardbirds and inducted again in 2009 as a solo artist.
