…probably not what you’re thinking.
A new study published in the “Journal of Food Protection” found that the germiest place in your kitchen isn’t among the usual suspect areas; counters, sink, or cutting board. Instead the area that may be harboring the most bacteria in your kitchen is your SPICE JARS.
In a recent study, researchers had 370 people prepare a meal consisting of turkey patties and a salad.
When the meal was finished being prepared, the team then swabbed the surfaces around their cooking space to look for bacteria.
The spice jars were where they found the MOST bacteria – 48% to be specific. More than TWICE the bacteria on any other surface. Only the cutting board and the lid of the trash can were even close to that amount of ick! This is primarily due to the fact we transfer the bacteria from our hands to other surfaces and don’t wash our hands nearly enough during the prep and cooking process.
I’m going home to wipe down my spices A.S.A.F.P.
