The 75th annual Emmy Awards have officially been moved back to a new date of January 15, 2024 at 7pm C.T., the same day as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They were originally set to take place on September 18, but due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes, that date has been pushed back four months later. The strikes have to do with the American actors’ union and their ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
According to Variety, Fox was pushing for the new date to be in September, while the TV Academy was hoping for it to be in November. As a part of the announcement, TV Academy also shared that the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will now be moved to January 6 and 7, rather than their original dates of September 9 and 10.
The date swap is the first time the Emmys switched dates since 2001, when they were forced to move it back due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and U.S. military action in Afghanistan, according to Variety. The January 15 date is also the earliest in the year the Emmys will place.
