As video games get more and more cinematic in nature, it’s only right that the new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 enlists the help of a bad-ass, A-list actor like Dave Bautista for its debut.
The trailer begins with Bautista pushing a cart of books in a very quiet library – then he whispers to another patron the words, “Mortal Kombat.” And thus begins a very Spartacus-like call to arms from the rest of the citizens of the city that begin to mass for the tournament.
Cool also for the old school gamers who remember the original 1993 “Mortal Monday” TV spot which signified the game’s console debut across multiple platforms.
For his part, the homage to the 1993 commercial did not go unnoticed by Bautista who said of the new trailer, “I vividly remember the original Mortal Monday commercial, especially the iconic scream… That’s what started my journey as a fan of Mortal Kombat, which continues to this day 30 years later. I’m very thrilled and honored to be a part of the game’s legacy.”
Now, some 30 years later the collective gaming culture is still screaming, “Mortal Kombat!!!!!!”
Mortal Kombat 1 will release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on September 19.
