Well, apparently not everyone is buying into the pink behemoth known as “The Barbie Movie” – Spinal Tap bassist, Derek Smalls (Harry Shaerer), is one of those lone wolves howling in the wild about the overabundance of Barbie with his first new song in five years called “Must Crush Barbie.”
Barbie-mania is not alive and well in the world of Smalls, in fact he refers to it in a recent article from Consequence of Sound as the “embodiment of lukewarm water“.
Smalls’ press release describes “Must Crush Barbie” as an “excoriating attack on the pink sensation” and a “much-needed antidote to the ubiquitous pinkness that has spilled out of movie theatres this summer and onto the high streets with wall-to-wall media coverage.”
Even though Smalls remains in the very thin minority on his cranky, fist-shaking takedown of the iconic Mattel fashion doll, it is good to hear that Spinal Tap’s sonic fury is alive and well – reminding us all that None More Black beats Hot Barbie Pink every time – when the volume goes to 11.
