For many years, beginning in 1973, Miller Lite ran a series of commercials featuring mainly retired sports stars debating whether the best thing about their product was that it “tastes great” or was “less filling“. They were extremely entertaining and as a result, extremely popular.
With John Madden being widely celebrated on Thanksgiving during the Packer game, I thought it might be fun to take a look back at one of those commercials in which he kind of, sort of, almost saved the game. However, in this case, the game was softball.
Among the other retired sports stars are our own Bob Uecker as well as baseball’s Billy Martin, Boog Powell, and Dick Williams, football’s Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, and Ben Davidson, and basketball’s Red Auerbach. Non-sports stars included Rodney Dangerfield, hard boiled crime novelist Mickey Spillane and actress Lee Meredith playing Mickey’s sidekick “The Doll”.
