A quick-thinking officer used a tried-and-true technique to rescue a man from a frozen pond… a dog. Not just any dog in this case, the loyal dog that belonged to the man who had fallen through the ice.
Police were called to Arbutus Lake where a 65-year-old Traverse City man fell through the ice-covered lake.
Michigan State Police Officer Kammeron Bennetts captured the rescue on his body camera, initially showing the man trapped in frigid waters – his head and shoulders above the thin ice, and his dog, Ruby, standing at his side.
The officer called Ruby and attached a rescue disc tethered to a rope to her collar. The man then called Ruby back to him, retrieving the disc . Officer Bennetts was then able to pull him to the lake’s edge across the icy surface.
The Michigan State Police rightfully praised Ruby in a post on X saying, “What a good girl!!! Amazing ice rescue from 7th District, MCO Bennetts. Creative thinking helped save a life!! EXCELLENT JOB MCO Bennetts and RUBY!! Great team work and well done!”
