Flare? UFO? Meteor? Fireball?
Concerned Floridians flooded 911 center with calls about a bright flash of light off the coast.
Some thought it was a distress flare from a ship – coincidentally there was a storm happening at the same time as the flash – so that was a good guess – so good in fact a U.S. Coast Guard rescue was sent out to look.
Others went a supernatural route sighting a fireball and still others looked to the skies and thought aliens or a crashing UFO was the cause. Turns out that it was actually a meteor that crashed to Earth during the storm.
Video below from the X account of Matt Hathaway shows the meteor succumbing to gravity.
More than a dozen people reported seeing the “fireball” to the American Meteor Society, a group that maintains a database of sightings from outer space.
