Kids have been using ‘alternate methods‘ (from cough syrup to aerosols) to get high for as long as there have been kids.
We had a kid in school try smoking catnip because he though it was “cat marijuana”.
Now they’re branching into baking supplies and we’re not talking getting drunk on vanilla extract – that’s so last year – now nutmeg, of all things, is the intoxicant du jour.
In a now viral TikTok video (570K), a teacher sent out a PSA about the concerning trend saying kids were caught in a random backpack check at school with jars of nutmeg. When confronted they claimed it was for a culinary class. Except for the fact the culinary arts instructor wasn’t teaching anything that required nutmeg. After the lie was discovered, the school resource officer got involved and the students were suspended. Over nutmeg? Well maybe more myristicin than nutmeg.
A cursory search finds the chemical responsible for the “high” caused by nutmeg is known as myristicin.
Myristicin is a compound found naturally in the essential oils of certain plants, such as parsley, dill, and nutmeg. Myristicin, produces a natural compound that has mind-altering effects if ingested in large doses. The buzz can last one to two days and can be hallucinogenic, much like LSD.
SO get ready to star showing ID at the grocery store if you want to make eggnog. Thanks kids…
