Exciting news for fans of the Joker franchise! The sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, has just released its first trailer, giving us a glimpse into what to expect for Joaquin Phoenix played by Arthur Fleck and his new partner in crime, Harley Quinn played by Lady Gaga. The film is set to hit theaters on October 4.
The trailer features a rendition of the classic song “What the World Needs Now Is Love” by Hal David and Burt Bacharach playing in the background, as we see Gaga as Harley Quinn meeting Phoenix as Arthur Fleck for the first time. She says to him,
“I’m nobody. I haven’t done anything with my life like you have.”
It’s clear in the trailer that the movie will have many musical scenes, and that is emphasized when Steve Coogan’s character says,
“We use music to make us whole, to balance the fractures within ourselves.”
The trailer then flashes through various scenes of Gaga and Phoenix dancing through the streets, running and weaving between cars, performing on stage, and even running away from a burning building, to name a few.
In another scene, Phoenix tells Coogan,
“I’ll tell you what’s changed: I’m not alone anymore,”
referencing his relationship with Gaga’s character.
Per Billboard, Variety reported that the film is “mostly a jukebox musical,” with about 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known songs,” as well as the possibility of one or two original soundtracks. Variety also reported that the sequel’s budget reached nearly $200 million. In comparison, the original film had a budget of $60 million.
I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited for this one. Check out the trailer below.
