This is not the subject of a new science fiction film but it certainly could be.
In early July, a nest of wasps were found at the Savannah River Site, a decommissioned manufacturing facility in Aiken, SC which used to produce weapons-grade plutonium and tritium. Upon further examination of the wasps it was discovered that they were radioactive, contaminated at ten times of what federal regulations allow. The live wasps were sprayed and killed and then disposed of as radioactive waste would be. It is unsure how the wasps became contaminated or how they were able to live in that condition.
This is not the first time radioactivity has been tied to wildlife at the abandoned facility. Radioactive bird feces was found at the site in 2017. It is unknown if it came from a contaminated bird or if the fecal matter became contaminated after being dropped at the facility.
