A theater company in Estonia wanted to create a performance of Romeo & Juliet that no one has ever seen… and they’ve certainly constructed one for the ages.
The group is called Kinoteater, and they’ve created a retelling of the classic Shakespeare tragedy interpreted not by actors – but with tractors – actually with trucks and construction vehicles all set in a limestone quarry (not Verona) just outside the city of Tallinn.
Romeo is played by a rally truck while Juliet is portrayed by a red Ford pickup truck.
The performance also uses excavators, city buses, cement mixers, and fire trucks to tell the Bard’s tale.
In one scene, Romeo & Juliet “kiss” using mechanical arms, while city buses drift across the stage like backup dancers. And the duel between Mercutio and Tybalt is performed by two excavators swinging their attachments like swords.
One audience member said, “Even though it was cars, it felt really sweet and cute.”
