We are proud to name as this week’s Laura Lee and Cutter Weenie of the Week, the town clerk who took her town for something north of ten grand. Actually sounds like it could be a lot more, but we don’t have the exact number. Kim Hopfinger had been the clerk and treasurer for the small Wisconsin village of Hustisford in Dodge County. A village with a population of around 1000 people. Last month, someone from the village contacted the Dodge County Sheriff’s office asking for an investigation into theft and embezzlement of funds. After an audit, all signs pointed to the person in charge of the money in the first place, Kim Hopfinger. On September 25th Kim was placed on leave, and this past Monday, she was arrested for misconduct in a public office and for theft greater than 10 grand. They also found out she had embezzled funds from the soccer club because she was also their treasurer. What did you need that kind of money for Kim, huh? You’re 65 years old in a small town, ten grand in that town is ten bucks per person, but that equals to some cool stuff getting done, like a banging pizza party for the soccer club, but no Kim, you ruined those dreams when you took the money. Embezzlement, in a village with a population of a thousand people, even white collar criminals are going to look at you like Ted Bundy looked at young women.
So for anyone wondering where the soccer club money went, turns out it went on vacation
So for the village’s financial system, maybe next time have more security measures in place beyond the “honor system.”
And so for the next treasurer, where the job description now comes with “annual polygraphs and trust falls”
