In 1998, Metallica released the all-covers album Garage Inc. It was a double album with the first disc featuring covers they had done throughout their career, including the then out of print Garage Days Re-Revisited. The second disc was all new covers, including two of Metallica’s biggest hits, a cover of Bob Seger’s “Turn The Page” and the Thin Lizzy tune “Whiskey in the Jar.” But it was their cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Tuesday’s Gone” that turned the most heads, mainly for its list of guest musicians.
Featuring Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinny of Alice in Chains, Pepper Kennan of Corrosion of Conformity, John Popper of Blues Traveler, Jim Martin of Faith No More, Les Claypool of Primus, and the legendary Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The song wasn’t recorded for the Garage Inc. album; it was actually a live in-studio performance for the radio station KSJO in San Jose, CA’s “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You” Christmas special.
In 2011, Metallica performed that song as part of their 30th anniversary show in 2011 with Gary Rossington, Pepper Keenan, Jim “Fatso” Martin and Jerry Cantrell.
